The Beast of Burdens

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.”

(Psalm 55:22, ESV)

The burden of failure plagues me regardless of my season in life. When I was raising my children, I was burdened with fear that I was going to be a bad mom and cause lifetime damage. When I was working as a single mom, I was burdened with struggles of work/life balance and not feeling guilty all the time. Now as an empty nester and semi-retired woman, I feel the burden of finishing my life well in the eyes of God.

Yet, there isn’t one burden that I needed to carry. Rather, it is necessary to transfer every single burden to the Lord. Jesus said, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30) It’s easy to forget that He is present to receive our burdens immediately when we remember to share with Him what is going on in our hearts.

Many times, our burdens are self-inflicted as we attempt to apply spiritual values in a worldly culture that is driven by the outward appearances of success. If we would pause during heaviness and reflect that God is our burden-bearer, we would quickly drop tons of weight off our minds.

The older I get, I’m more aware of weights that I’m not meant to carry. I tend to lay them at the feet of Jesus in morning prayers so that I can fully experience all the good He has in store for me. It hasn’t been easy and many times I pick up what I dropped off by midday. Yet, in God’s faithfulness—He gently beckons me through His Spirit to lay it all down and trust in Him.

What’s the Point?

When you are feeling the heaviness of burdens, it’s time to lay them down at the foot of the cross. You were meant to start and end every day full of God’s grace. The Lord has more than enough strength to carry all of your burdens. Try Him today!
